Nedra Bunker, a second grade teacher at Monticello Elementary School, is the 2013 Teacher of the Year for the San Juan School District. Bunker was honored at a banquet in Blanding on March 7.

Nedra has taught for more than 30 years and is known for her skill and dedication to the art of teaching. She now will move on to statewide competition.

While presenting the award, Superintendent Douglas Wright said the following about Bunker, “Nedra is committed to student success and achievement. She cares about every child she teaches. She works diligently to ensure that both she and her students are successful each day.

“Nedra is a team player and supportive of school-wide goals. She is masterful at implementing positive behavior techniques as well as instructional methods and strategies. Nedra makes learning meaningful and fun!

Nedra has earned a bachelors degree from Brigham Young University, a masters degree from Southern Utah University, won a Golden Apple Honorable Mention Award; earned an English as a Second Language endorsement; and is a Reading level 2 specialist.

She is one of a group of dedicated educators who were honored at the banquet. The employee of the year at Monticello Elementary is Melani Maloy, a secretary.

Elisa Rogers, a math teacher, is teacher of the year at Monticello High; and Curtis Welch, the head custodian at the school, is employee of the year.

Valerie Turk, a special education / pre-school teacher, is teacher of the year at Blanding Elementary; while Donna Jones, a secretary, is employee of the year.

Teach of the year at Albert R Lyman Middle School is Brad Winder, a sixth grade science teacher, while Jens Nielson, the custodian, is employee of the year.

Monty Lee, a social studies teacher, is the teacher of the year at San Juan High; and librarian Jeanna Grover is employee of the year.

Montezuma Creek Elementary School honored kindergarten teacher Ariella Todachinnie as teacher of the year and interventionist Ina Miles as employee of the year.

Whitehorse High School honored Lance Knight, a health and PE teacher, as teacher of the year and librarian Ella Redhouse as employee of the year.

Honored from Tse’bii’nidzisgai Elementary School are teacher of the year Lavina Holiday, a first grade teacher, and employee of the year Victoria Holiday, the secretary at the elementary school.

Howard Dee, a student achievement assistance coordinator, is teacher of the year at Monument Valley High School, and Lenora Lameman, a bus driver and substitute teacher, is the employee of the year.

Kurt Wood, a science and art teacher, is teacher of the year at Navajo Mountain High School, while librarian and A+ Facilitator Daphine Atene is employee of the year.
