The Monticello and San Juan girls basketball teams faced off in the first of two scheduled games last Tuesday night, December 9 in Blanding.

The Broncos jumped out to an early lead and held on down the stretch to pick up the non-region win against the Bucks 50-39.

Early on in the contest, San Juan established their momentum, outscoring Monticello 13-7 in the first quarter. The Broncos built their lead to 13 points at the half as the doubled up their first quarter score and held the Bucks to just six points in the period taking a 26-13 lead into the locker room.

San Juan pushed their lead to 15 points early in the third quarter before Monticello fought back, trimming the Bronco lead to just four points about midway through the quarter.

The Bucks had their best quarter in the third, scoring 16 points while the Broncos managed only 10 points as they hung onto a narrow seven point lead 36-29.

The final eight minutes were the closest contested of the night as San Juan narrowly outscored Monticello 11-10 to claim a 50-39 victory over their cross county rivals.

Atlanta Black led all scorers with 18 points for Monticello while Mary Beh dropped in 11 and Alyssa Reeve pitched in seven points. Michaela Wolford rounded out the scoring for the Bucks with three points in the loss.

San Juan’s boys’ basketball team traveled to Mt. Pleasant, UT this past Thursday to take on the Hawks of North Sanpete High School. In spite of shooting ball well the Broncos found themselves on the wrong side of a 73-64 score.

The Broncos started off the game a little sluggish and before they knew it trailed by 13 points, 22-9 after one quarter of play. San Juan answered in the second quarter scoring 22 points, while North Sanpete added 17 to their total to take a 39-31 lead into half time.

A poor third quarter must about put a win out of reach for the Broncos as they scored just 10 points in the quarter. The Hawks on the other hand had built on their lead scoring 18 points in the quarter. At the end of three quarters San Juan trailed 57-41.

Down but not out the Broncos battled back in the final eight minutes of play. San Juan torched the nets for 23 points while their defense held the Hawks to only 16 points. In the end it just wasn’t enough as the Broncos fell to the Hawks 73-64.

Jordan Blake led all scorers with 18 points, including five three-point shots. DiQuan Lopez scored 11 points, while Jaden Torgerson and Johnathon Lewis each added 10 points. Max Morley finished with eight points and Kesian Barton rounded out the scoring for San Juan with five points.
