The San Juan Broncos wrestling team competed in their Divisional Tournament this past Friday and Saturday, February 6 and 7.
As a team, the Broncos finished seventh out of the nine teams competing in their division.
Individually, seven San Juan wrestlers placed and qualified for the state tournament.
Reilly Myrick led the Broncos with a third place finish in the 182 lb. weight class and Tsosie Warren finished fifth at 106 lbs.
They were followed by a host of sixth place finishers, including Jared Webb at 113 lbs., Dominik Perkins at 126 lbs. and Grange Simpson at 145 lbs.
The other two Broncos grapplers who qualified are Coleman Black, seventh place at 170 lbs., and Adrian Bitsinnie, who took eighth place at 285 lbs.
The 2A State Wrestling Tournament begins Friday, February 13 at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT. Weigh-ins will begin at 11 a.m. Friday morning.
In basketball news, both the San Juan High boys and girls teams locked up a post-season births this past week.
The Ladies did so by defeating Grand, 46-31, and then besting Wasatch Academy, 51-42.
Against Grand, San Juan was led by Tyla Morris, who had a game high 14 points and a staggering nine steals.
Right behind Morris is Sara Morley, who finished the game with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Jade Palmer was next, scoring seven points, followed by Krista Grover, who chipped in four points.
Arizona Carr rounded out the scoring with two points. She also led the team in rebounds with 16.
Morris again led all scorers with 18 points in the San Juan game against Wasatch Academy, with 12 of those points coming from beyond the three-point line.
Carr also hit double figures with 10 points, just ahead of Morley who had nine. Palmer again added seven points to the teams total, she was followed by Jessica Swenson with four points.
Grover ended the night with two points and Kelsey Flavel with one point in the game.
The Lady Broncos travel to Salina on Friday, February 13 to take on the North Sevier Lady Wolves.
Then on Saturday night, San Juan takes aim at South Sevier in Monroe, UT to wrap up their regular season. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m.
The boys punched their card to the post season by defeating Emery at home last Wednesday night, 68-53.
In their second game of the week, the San Juan High boys had a chance to take control of the Region 15 standings and move into first place.
Unfortunately for the Broncos, the Rams of South Sevier had other plans as they handed the visiting Broncos a 15-point loss, 73-58.
Jordan Blake led all scorers in the game against Emery with 20 points. He also had an impressive defensive game, snatching six steals.
Next is DiQuan Lopez with 14 points. Jaden Torgerson notched nine points and five rebounds.
Three different Broncos added eight points each, including Kade Palmer (10 rebounds), Max Morley (nine rebounds), and Jonathon Lewis.
Caleb Pugh rounded out the Broncos offense with two points.
Against South Sevier, San Juan was paced by Lopez, who finished with 16 points and seven steals.
Blake added 11 points for the Broncos, while Morley had 10 points and six rebounds.
Lewis was right behind both of them with nine points. Palmer (eight rebounds) and Pugh each finished with four points and Kesian Barton had two points.
San Juan will finish up their regular season schedule at home this week as they host North Sevier on Friday, February 13, for Senior Night.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
